What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practiced for thousands of years. It is commonly thought of as the insertion of needles into specific points on the body, but this is just one aspect of treatment. During a session, I may also use warmth or apply glass cups to areas of pain. Gentle massage of areas of tension, particularly the neck and shoulders, may also form part of the treatment.

According to Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the smooth movement of energy- known as Qi- through a series of channels beneath the skin. Illness can arise when the flow of this energy is disturbed. Chinese medicine stipulates that by inserting fine needles into these channels, the body's own healing response can be stimulated, and natural balance restored.

Chinese medicine can also offer us a wealth of dietary and lifestyle advice, accumulated over thousands of years, to improve the quality of our health. If you would like information about the suitability of acupuncture for you contact Candy by clicking here.

Frequency of Treatment

Treatment is usually weekly to start with but will depend upon your own individual response to treatment. Sometimes the effects of treatment can be dramatic, and only a couple of treatments may be required. Other people may need treatment over several weeks. Once a condition improves, treatments will be spaced at greater intervals.

What happens in a consultation?

Your first consultation will be an opportunity for you to give as much information as you can about your main problem. You might be asked how long you have had the problem, what makes it feel better or worse and the character of any pain that you might be feeling. You will be asked about your general health. That might include questions about your sleep patterns, digestion and emotional state.

A great deal of information can be obtained from feeling the pulse and observing the tongue. It may also be helpful to palpatate the abdomen and any areas of discomfort. All of this will give me the information I need to make a diagnosis according to the principals of Chinese Medicine and to develop a treatment plan.

What does it feel like to have acupuncture?

Acupuncture needles are very fine and often inserted with guide tubes which means that treatment is generally comfortable. Most people find that having acupuncture is a relaxing and pleasant experience and they generally feel calmer, noticing improvements to their health and energy in the days following a treatment. On average, anything from two to a dozen needles may be used.
